Rutger Hauer brought to life a character over the course of a film that arrived at a certain point so perfectly that he knew his final speech, as written, was not right, it was too much. With his wealth of creative talent and conviction, he took a knife to a speech he knew was not working and helped craft what I think is the greatest monologue in film history in one of the greatest films.
Of course there is so much more to Rutger Hauer than Blade Runner. However Roy Batty is his defining work for those that enjoyed his career. And with it he spoke volumes about the fragility of humanity and our short time here on earth.
I’m a few days behind on this because I did not know what to write. When our heroes pass, we are reminded of their effect on us and our own humanity, and the moments that influenced us that will be lost in time…like tears in rain.
Goodbye Rutger.
